Job Description:
Clark University seeks a strategic communications leader to be its first senior director (SD) for advancement communications.
The SD will serve as the lead for communications within the advancement team and be the central coordinator with the University Marketing and Communications.
The SD will report to the vice president for university advancement and will be a member of the advancement cabinet.
The SD will initially manage a team of one senior associate director with the goal of expanding the team over time.
Responsibilities As a Senior Director of University Advancement Communications, your role would involve leading and overseeing the strategic planning and execution of advancement communication initiatives.
Your primary responsibilities would include:
Campaign Planning:
Developing and implementing a comprehensive advancement communication strategy to support the university's advancement goals collaborating closely with the Office of Marketing and Communications.
Team Leadership:
Managing a team of one or more communication professionals, including senior associate director of advancement services.
Thought Leadership:
Representing university advancement as a subject matter expert in the field of philanthropy and advancement communications, actively participating in professional development opportunities, and staying abreast of industry trends and best practices.
Top Donor Proposal Writing:
Taking a lead role in crafting compelling proposals and cases for support for major gift solicitations, working closely with development officers and other key stakeholders to effectively communicate the impact of philanthropic investments and secure significant donations.
Presidential Briefings:
Prepare comprehensive briefing materials for the senior leadership to ensure they are well briefed for key meetings.
Additionally, managing the follow-up process by creating personalized follow-up notes and updates for donors based on the outcomes of these meetings.
Alumni and Donor Outreach:
Developing, in collaboration with the office of marketing and communications, key messages to be used by alumni relations and stewardship teams outreach initiatives to engage alumni and donors.
Prospect Research and Analysis:
Collaborating with the development services team to conduct research on potential major donors, analyzing their interests, philanthropic history, and capacity to give, in order to inform tailored communication strategies and solicitations.
Content Development:
Overseeing the creation of compelling and persuasive content, including fundraising appeals, impact stories, annual reports, and other campaign collateral.
Collaboration:
Working closely within University Advancement, with the Office of Marketing and Communications, and other university stakeholders to ensure coordinated messaging and maximize impact.
Requirements:
Education:
A bachelor's degree required.
Masters degree in communications, marketing or public relations preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of five years experience, preferably in advancement communications or higher education setting.
Communication Skills:
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
Strategic Thinking:
The Senior Director of Advancement Communications is responsible for developing and executing advancement communication strategies in close collaboration with University Marketing and Communications, University Leadership, and Advancement Colleagues.
Leadership and Team Management:
This role involves overseeing at least another team member.
Experience in guiding and mentoring staff, and coordinating projects is preferred.
